BASIC INSTRUCTIONS: Probably the most difficult step in laying stone is making ready the bed. Usually a two-inch bed of sand is sufficient if your stones are the same thickness. If the thickness varies, you could need a deeper sand bed. To keep weeds down, use landscape fabric. In case your soil does not drain effectively, think about a four-inch bed of gravel under the sand. Use landscape cloth between gravel and sand when using this method.
